The first half of the 1700’s were heavily marred by European war, but the English and Scottish, inbetween ‘outbreaks’ of Plague, were busy fighting amongst themselves. It is after the Civil War, that the curious disappearance of plague until the Monarchy is restored, makes us wonder who exactly is responsible for these ‘outbreaks’.
In this second Episode, I talk about how constant switching of allegiances, barbaric warring practices and being terrible with money, gave the broad but mistaken appearance of a ‘developing’ European state being relatively inconsequential.
Tools of warfare however, do not need deep coffers. Instead demanding deep loyalty of others without being loyal back and expecting assistance with enemies despite being at fault. Carrying out acts of self interest and wrapping them up as kindness or respect and knowing exactly how to crash a market, are just some of the ways this nation took advantage of most of Northern Europe.
Next we arrive in America during the War of Independence, down to Switzerland and Neuchatel, then back to Paris to the money markets and Salons, and follow the planned Storming of the Bastille with its carefully chosen cast of characters.
